4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not the best, 22 Feb 2006
By Mr. RCS Young "rcsy" (Camberley, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you're a fan of Chess you're probably aware that there are a number of different versions out there and that Tim Rice changes his mind on a regular basis as to what the best approach is to the show.

This recording offers a great deal over and above the original cast recording. The story flows better, Someone Else's Story is a fabulous song and the majority of the good stuff is left well alone. Vocally it is solid but it doesn't have anything to set it apart dramatically from some of the other recordings.

What it doesn't do is offer a good base for any amateurs that are performing the show (in the UK). If you can find a copy of the Danish version of Chess then go with that in preference to this one. It has Someone Else's Story and it also has Soviet Machine and Merano - songs that are fundamental to the show for me.

If you're buying for the pleasure of listening then I'd advocate the original London cast recording over this but that's more personal preference than anything else.

But if you're looking for a template to help you when performing "Chess" hunt like mad for the Danish version (which is in English) of the show. It is a very good version of the show that is all but note for note with the score that you'll receive.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Chess Recording, 5 Aug 2004
By A Customer
I think this is the best version of Chess. It has the stunning ballad "Someone Else's Story" and fantastic vocals especially Judy Kuhn whose voice is stunning and surprisingly un-Broadway.

A smaller piece (or so it seems) than the original recording but with several additions, including the beautiful Hungarian lullaby this is a lovely recording of a very underrated musical.

3.0 out of 5 stars BAD RETELLING OF THE STORY!, 8 Mar 2008
By Mr. Nathan Armstrong - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
the orginal chess is such a musical epic this sounds very pale in comparission.

the epic feel of the musical extravaganza has gone..and has much of the original story!

most of the story and the songs are reworked but the mastery is lacking!

for fans of abba its interesting! for fans of "chess" its an interesting interpretation! but if you are new to chess please buy the original cd...its a hundred times better...the sound..the vocals..the orchestration is so much bigger and better..and the actual story is easier to follow than this version!

a nice add on or follow up but not a good introduction

This version of Chess was disapointing. No wonder the Broadway version didn't last long. Do your selves a favor and get the vastly superior 2 disc set of the original recording... Read more
